C h a p t e r T w e n t y T h r e e
Friday, Sept. 16th:
10:40 PM.
Backstage.
Emma could hardly believe what she was doing. She allowed Katie to talk her into coming backstage, by promising her that they'd be hidden when they so clearly weren't.
There was one person standing in front of Emma, and she could see Nick Jonas very clearly just 10 feet away from her. If he had the urge to look offstage to his right, he'd see her and all of her efforts to stay away from him would be a waste.
She should've left.
It definitely wouldn't be the first time....
It was only going to be a 20 minute set, and Emma didn't even have to stay for the whole thing, why was she freaking out? Maybe just the idea of being so close to Nick but wanting to be far away from him was making her lose her mind.
They started off with a song off of the new album. Emma had never heard it before and could barely hear the lyrics through her fear, but it sounded like another Burnin' Up/Paranoid single. Then they played S.O.S. and Emma even allowed herself to dance a little bit. The rest of the set was a mixture of songs off of the upcoming disc and old songs that Emma used to listen to back when she was a fan.
Finally, after a few more songs, Nick took to the mic. "Alright, this next song is going to be our last one but I just want to thank all you guys for coming out and celebrating my birthday with me!" The crowd screamed in response and Emma remembered days when she would stand backstage and cheer Nick on, proudly beaming at how many fans he had.
Nick waited for the noise to die down a bit and continued on. "This song is off of our third record, and was a lot of fun to write. It won a teen choice award back in oh nine, and I think you guys know which one I'm talking about. So to help us out, I want you guys to give a huge welcome to my really great friend, Miley Cyrus!" The crowd screamed louder. Emma nearly passed out as she felt the group of people behind her part. She turned around to leave and walked smack into Miley.
"Move it, sister." she barked. Emma just stepped to the side without making eye contact with her and tried to keep walking but Katie stopped her.
"C'mon, just stay for a little bit. I think you should see what she's planning." she whispered sympathetically. Emma went rigid at the thought of Miley scheming something and turned back around to face the stage. It was unbearable to watch them perform together, singing a song about getting back together. Emma thought back to when he and Miley first wrote the song and felt her fists curl up into tiny balls of rage.
After what seemed like years, the song finally ended and Emma turned to leave, but Katie stopped her and whispered a small 'wait' in her ear. Why was she making Emma suffer through this?! Emma turned back around for the second time and painfully watched Miley and Nick hug onstage. She assumed they would exit from the left, but instead, they just stood out onstage, and Miley grabbed Nick's hand in hers and brought the mic in her other hand to her mouth.
"I just wanna thank y'all for celebratin' here with us today. I also wanna say that sometimes things can go back to the way they were before the storm hits." she said in her annoying country twang. She looked over a Nick, and she saw him look back at her with a familiar look. Then, in what seemed like slow motion, Miley leaned in a kissed him. On the mouth. On stage. In front of a crowd full of girls.
Emma suddenly felt like the world tilted underneath her feet and she saw Katie mouth the words 'I'm sorry' in her direction. It didn't matter... Katie's apologies wouldn't fix a damn thing. "It's nice that they've decided to be so open about their relationship." Emma trembled, and for the third time she turned to leave... but this time, no one stopped her.
